Masami’s Ceramics
Using stoneware and porcelain, my pottery is thrown on the wheel and fired in an electric kiln. I focus on form and surface development as well as explore glazes and glazing technique in order to unify form and colors. My creations are influenced by the traditional “wabi-sabi” Japanese ceramics which are imbued with subtle taste and elegant simplicity. I concentrate on balancing utility and beauty in my work. I think texture, weight, and functionality are just as important as design and originality. Although my ceramics are usually utilitarian, they express my thoughts, ideas and feelings. While I feel I’m in control of the medium when I create objects from clay, the final result depends a lot on the firing process because results are sometimes surprising.

I work in mid-range stoneware and porcelain, with a wide range of color. A mix of functional and sculptural, I celebrate both natural forms and traditionally feminine decorative patterning.

I’m a Portland-based graphic designer and illustrator, and an avid hiker. During the week I’m busy at my desk, but on weekends I like to get out and explore the forests and wide open landscapes of Oregon and Washington. The beauty and diversity I discover on these hikes inspires my art. I use my technical design skills to create these richly-colored, very detailed illustrations. Using InDesign or Illustrator I draw a series of points that I fill with color. These are meticulously drawn to capture the intricate textures found in nature. The digital process creates very clear, vivid colors that give the art an almost surreal feel. My goal is to bring the beauty of the great Northwest into your home, or, better yet, to inspire you to step outside and discover our beautiful scenery.
